Tanuj Samaddar was born in Dec, 2004 in the quaint township of Rangia in Assam. He began his artistic journey at an age when he could barely speak in full sentences. The creative odyssey which had unfolded almost two decades ago paved his path to global recognition. Today Tanuj is not just an artist but has expanded his expertise to the fields of public policy, activism and geopolitics. With several civilian awards in his possession, Tanuj has made his mark not only in the field of fine arts but has been recognised internationally for his community engagement efforts.
Tanuj Samaddar has received the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2021 in the field of fine arts from the Hon. President of India. He is also a recipient of the U.S. President’s Education Award. Other important accolades in his possession include the prestigious Karmaveer Chakra Award from iCongo in collaboration with the UNDP. In the past, he has received the Global Kid’s Achievers Award and the coveted Kentucky Colonel Commission from the Hon. Governor of Kentucky. This is the highest civilian award of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and was appointed as the Cultural Ambassador of the Commonwealth and Aide-de-Camp to the Governor. Till date, he has received more than 300 awards in different fields of expertise.
But his artistic pursuit was merely a launchpad for something greater. Tanuj chose art as his tool for creating a sustained impact across a plethora of domains. With a primary focus on education and youth empowerment Tanuj laid the foundation of Youth Meets in his hometown back in 2021. As the entire world was brought to a standstill due to the pandemic, something truly inspiring was getting shape in the rather quaint township of Rangia in Assam (India). During the same time multiple educational workshops were also organised across the subdivision for the unprivileged kids, as the education sector was one of the worst hit during the pandemic. Although his community engagement efforts were marked by numerous other campaigns including but not limited to food drives and plantation drives, yet promoting unbridled and quality education (SDG 4) still continues to be one of his primary target areas.
For his relentless efforts in this domain, he was also nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize also dubbed as the ‘Children’s Nobel Peace Prize’. Tanuj was subsequently appointed as a Global Youth Advisor in the Global Youth Advisory Council of Art of Health-Zimbabwe in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Under Project ‘ART-4-SERENITY’ in collaboration with the Council he has influenced more than 2000 youths across the world, raising global awareness about the mental health stigma. In his previous roles as a YOUTH CAMPAIGNER for the Ministry Of Health, he had raise awareness regarding COVID VACCINATION among the youths, also being a first time voter himself, he through his digital campaigns on election campaigns with ALL INDIA RADIO elicited the consciousness among youths to exercise their valuable right of voting. Tanuj has also been appointed as the Country Lead for Climate Change Writers, leveraging grassroots storytelling to influence climate action and policy discourse at both national and global platforms.
He has represented India in the International Conference of Youth Empowerment & Gender Neutrality organised by European Center of Studies & Initiatives. He is actively engages with International Women’s Peace Group, South Korea & World Organisation for Sustainability Leadership, California. Tanuj’s contribution to the society was recognised by the State Government of Assam when he was nominated for the third highest civilian award of Assam : ‘Assam Gaurav’ award. In December, 2024 Tanuj was felicitated by the Finance Minister of Assam on his 19th birth anniversary. Tanuj is currently leaving his impressions in the field of public policy which has been marked by his recent involvements with Young Leaders for Active Citizenship, Impact and Policy Research Institute, New Delhi and the Indian National Science Academy. At the Indian National Science Academy, Tanuj is working on a research project focussed on the elimination of middle man monopoly in the handloom and handicrafts value chain in India; this effort will culminate in the creation of a national report on Indian handicraft sector. Tanuj is also associated with IIT Guwahati in the development of an e-module raising awareness about Rabies in the Northeast India.
